was a record high for the seventh year in a row.

With that, the first truth is revealed, there is a ton of money just waiting for you to extract in this industry.

The question is: How much of it do you want to make?

Besides an “accident,” there is nothing more infuriating, more bothersome and more vexing for the proud new car owner than having to deal with the eyesore caused to their beloved new vehicle than a ding, a dent, scratch or a blemish, no matter how minor.

It happens all… the… time.

The folks that care about their vehicles, the ones who see it as an extension of themselves, who they are, who they represent or who they aspire to be…

They are goldmines of opportunity for all sorts of ancillary car repair experts including PDR specialists like you.

Well, if you want to play it safe, play it small and compete head on, with every other commoditized, often mistreated, generally jaded, and usually underpaid dent repair hack that’s out there.

You should just go and get a low paying tech job...

It’s not too hard to do that if your goal is to just get by.

I’m sure there might be some place that’ll take ya, and let you scrape by, let ya earn a meager living, filled with low pay and long hard hours of work.

I hear these common pain points over and over again from the new and veteran PDR techs trying to make this skill pay off for them.

Fortunately, I also had to figure out how to deal with these frustrations for myself, too (now you don’t have to).

Look, I promise you, this field is safe from saturation and will always provide a way for you to make a living, but only if you set yourself up for success, correctly.

Most of the fears common with trying to grow your own business deal with uncertainty and other unknown variables, which is completely understandable.

Things you might be afraid of include:

Here’s a troubling scenario, how would you handle it: You have to fix a dent in a car worth $65,000, but, in order to fix it, you have to drill a hole, potentially causing more damage…what do you do to make sure the customer doesn’t get angry with you if further damage does happen?

I’ve been doing this 25 years and I still make sure I do this before fixing anyone’s car that requires drilling.

I’ll teach you how to deal with this so it’s never an issue for you.

Other fears you might have include:

If you’re new at this, you probably would like to know what are the things you should do so that you virtually guarantee you make no less than $85,000 (or more) in your first year at this?

Honestly, the potential you have in this industry is unreal.

This could be your easiest shot at success, especially if you didn’t get your degree, but, only if you do things the right way.

I’ve been doing this a long time and what I’m about to say next might not be appreciated by some PDR “trainers” in our field.

Why?

Because, there are a lot of them that are really just high priced snake oil salesman...

Now look, of course, your skills have to be good, but ultimately, you’ve got to be able to market your skill set if you want to make any real money.

So, what happens after you learn how to do this stuff correctly?

Obviously, you’re either going to try and secure a job or you’ve got to learn how to properly market your business.

Here’s where you’ll encounter another type of predator.

They call themselves marketing experts, but really they’re just new age media salesman. They don't know how to implement what they are selling you...

Most of these peddlers are overcharging by at least $500 to $1500 a month for new age digital media services with no real strategy behind them.

If that’s the case, you might as well just advertise yourself in the Yellow pages (see how far that gets ya).

It’s not a system if it doesn’t cover MULTIPLE ways for you to grow your business and the truth is, most folks aren’t selling you a system.

They’re selling you a paid media channel.

The reality is none of those things on their own will have any real immediate positive effect on your business.

If you don’t want to get ripped off, heed my advice.

In order to have a system that works requires proper setup. That means it’s going to take a little bit of work, but fortunately you don’t have to do it yourself.

Before figuring out my life, I am a former marine (part of helping me figure it all out).

After that journey, I was still trying to find my way.

I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, but I had “grit and go for it” determination.

I knew I wanted to do something meaningful.

I wanted success.

I wanted financial freedom, just as sure as I bet most people do.

I tried the whole corporate sales job thing. Sold life insurance, but it just didn’t feel right; didn’t suit my personality of what I wanted to do with my life.

Dated a girl at the time who’s dad did dent repair work.

He seemed to have EVERYTHING I’ve always wanted out of life. The mansion, the cars, the boats…he was living the dream.

Not only that, the guy always seemed to be home ALL-the-time.

Those folks didn’t have a want for anything...

I wanted that lifestyle!

I wanted that and so…lucky for me, he needed help, and he was willing to mentor me...

On the first day out with him, I bared first hand witness to earnings of approximately $1300 for what amounted to about 3 hours worth of work...

That’s like more than $400 an hour! 

Right then, I KNEW….this was for me.

I didn’t know it at the time but I learned this trade under some less than ideal conditions – bad weather, non-formalized training, and trial by fire, winging it by the seat of my pants type stuff.

This was 1998 and I was working 3 jobs while learning how to become a PDR expert.

Determined to make this work I committed 3 to 4 hours of practice EVEN while maintaining my 3 jobs.

What type of jobs did I do?

Anything to keep the bills paid. I did odd, menial jobs like car part deliveries for $7 an hour, $10 an hour jobs delivering food, etc. Anything it took.

After 4 and half months my training was complete.

Today, most determined folks that want to get good at this can replicate the same learning in about 2 or 3 weeks.

To get cash flow coming in I routinely solicited car dealership accounts and in short order I was able to secure about 15 of them, all paying me on a small but steady and consistent basis.

But then, something amazing happened.

In 2000, while out looking for another dealership account, fate brought me to a premier BMW dealer.

It was the right place at the VERY right time...

They were to become my “Whale” account...

After a brief demonstration of my skills, boom, they hired me and agreed to pay me a base of $15,000 a month plus a certain amount based on volume of work...

I made more money from that one account than all the other accounts I had combined, at the time, and that arrangement lasted for 4 and a half years...

Being that I was I was a contractor, I was able to hire out my own help (why not…now I could afford it), expand my service offerings and grow my business.

As time went on, I was able to secure at least 60 dealership accounts that covered area stretching from Alameda, Napa, all the way to Vacaville, California.

That year I earned about $400,000.

Yeah…I couldn’t believe it, either.

However, and this is very, very important that you learn this, what I’m about to tell you…

Don’t ever take your situation for granted...

When you’re down, it’s not always gonna stay that way. You keep plugging away at it and you’ll eventually succeed, but there is an alternative side to this anecdote.

When you’re up, that doesn’t mean you can’t lose it all, tomorrow...

How do I know?

Because…

Right after I had my best financial year ever…

The very next year I had my WORST financial year ever.

Yup.

In 2005 I LOST IT ALL. That year, I earned only about $24,000.

Went from making the most I’ve ever made in my life to making the absolute LEAST I’ve ever made in my life within 1 freakin’ year.

WTF?!!

Hindsight always gives you 20/20 vision.

I didn’t see it at the time, but the signs were there that the economy was tightening up...

The first sign I should have recognized was the amount of cars being sold by my bread and butter client. They went from selling 125 cars a month and dropped down to about 60 per month.

Obviously, they couldn’t keep paying me the same amount if they were losing money, too.

I didn’t see it that way...

I took it personally (big mistake).

They had been paying me well over $250,000 a year, but had to scale back to $85,000.

Though, again, in hindsight, that’s still good money, but, my ego was running amuck...

That pay cut, though, I just couldn’t accept it...

What was my objection?

Why was I so bitter?

Well, up until that time, I had sacrificed so much of my time and gave them the best of me.

I worked Sundays without fail, executed quickly, never kept the dealership waiting, never a delay.

I felt like all of that had been taken for granted when they cut my pay.

I was bitter!

Knowing what I know now, I should have stayed with that company.

In fact, it’s NEVER about you.

It’s about everything else: The other party, the economy, market need, other people’s desires, etc.

Don’t let your ego and pride get the better of you because whenever you do, I can just about guarantee you that right there will be your downfall.

Your ego does nothing for you but gives you feel empty bragging rights about nothing that matters.

I had to learn the hard way to swallow my pride, and check myself.

2008, as you may or may not know was when Obama gave the car industry that bailout, the real estate market was in a free fall and everyone was losing everything...

And, here I am, in my little microcosm thinking I was a big shot and this dealership wasn’t going to take advantage of me, dang it!

Man, was I so short sighted.

After saying declining the dealerships pay cut offer, thinking I was just gonna waltz over to some other spot and simply replace what I was making, reality came crashing down on me.

The no’s were deafening.

The struggle was sobering...

After the fear, the panic and reality set in, there was nothing I could do to save what little fortune I had amassed, and I soon spiraled.

I lost 2 properties, the place I lived in and a rental property that I had acquired...

Depression came for me, quickly.

I felt like my reality had been flipped upside down...

The skill I had so painstakingly invested time in mastering, I felt, was now completely useless (again…WRONG!).

The real estate smarts I thought I had, which were debunked swiftly, felt like added insult to injury.

I was defeated.

I mean, I still made a half assed effort like I’d put up Yelp listings and Craigslist ads (I stil had to eat), but efforts were minimal.

Still struggling, in 2009 was when life really started kicking me while I was already down.

The GREAT RECESSION was in full swing, my dog died, frustrated with the situation (and I can’t really blame her), my then girlfriend of 5 years left me...

Having lost everything, I had to file bankruptcy...

I bet you can imagine I was depressed. I mean life was terrible...

It was bad...

Fortunately, I still had a few friends who cared about me (or took pity on me…whatever), and wanted to help.

At my buddy’s urging I moved with him to Hawaii in order to help me get my head right and get me back on my feet.

I stayed in Hawaii for about 4 months, all the while dabbling in learning online marketing stuff...

While trying to pivot, I taught myself Search Engine Optimization and dabbled in affiliate marketing...

Strange thing was while in Hawaii, someone in LA saw some of my earlier Yelp review listings, called me up and offered me a job...

The guy was buying out a friend in Concord (hence he thought I was still in the area)...

They were looking for a tech, I needed money, so, begrudgingly (I was still sore at the car industry, so I said no initially), I took the job.

While away though, in Hawaii, I had gotten pretty good at understanding how the search engines work.

I got really good at ranking things at the top positions in Google.

I did that to make some decent extra money in affiliate marketing (I basically sent traffic to other people’s offers in exchange for a commision).

Since the traffic I sent didn’t cost me any money, and I knew how to do it, I figured “why not?”

While with another premier BMW dealer, I still thought about working for myself, but I didn’t want to rely on car dealerships, solely, to support me...

I decided I could offer my services retail to the general public, too.

I mean, I knew how to get online traffic, why not do this for myself?

I started doing SEO (Search Engine Optimization) for my own local business because it worked and I knew if I could start getting free traffic for the service I was doing then I could have the freedom to do what I wanted, where and when I wanted...

I knew how to market and I knew how to fix dents, I enjoyed both things, I’m good at both, so why not...

At the time I was thinking about leaving the car dealership for the second time, I was earning a not so bad $75,000. With the money I was storing up, I also tested my skills with Paid (Adwords PPC) online ads.

As I was able to see some success with that, I decided to get Google Adwords certified...

When you know how to drive traffic for free, when you know how to put a $1 into something and, immediately, turn around and pull $2 dollars out…you can control your own destiny...

Quickly, I used all of the marketing skills I had to get a $hit ton of leads for my own dent repair business and the clients I was taking on were retail car owners, themselves.

Now mind you, I wasn’t just doing Google AdWords to get these leads...

No, I was using Bing, Yahoo, YouTube, other paid sites AS WELL as some pretty sophisticated Free strategies and tactics, too...

A few other businesses noticed I was getting a ton of consistent leads, traffic and customers and asked for my help.

They wanted to know what I was doing that they weren’t.

I mean, they had paid ads, too.

They were trying SEO, but still, they weren’t seeing the type of results I was able to get.

That’s when it hit me like a ton of bricks...
